Gigaset is one of the leading manufacturers of cordless telephones and Europe’s DECT telephone market leader. We started our project with the progression of hardware, especially with regards to display components. Together with the Gigaset team, we examined new possibilities for the interface and interactive design of new handsets from six product ranges.
Using moodboards and personas we defined target groups and user environments of different product ranges to create individual stylings. Following initial design explorations, we were able to define absolute terms with regards to screen layout, baseline grid, etc. With 64000 available colours a 128 x 160 px resolution was possible. The existing icon syntax was refined and progressed for the technical framework. To save memory space, for example, we designed special fonts in two- and four-colour displays for improved legibility and for efficient use within the available screen size. It was important to us to stay true to Gigaset’s typographic appearance, regardless of technical restraints.
Following the design development, our design team helped the software developers implement the graphical user interface. During this process, we use a specific Project Extranet to document data, information and decisions. It allows everyone involved to independently retrieve information and change histories, download necessary data and write comments. We replaced the static design specification (Style Guide) and documented dynamic design elements and interaction principles. This helped us create a significantly more efficient implementation process for the individual product ranges.
