Plastic Logic Reader

Since the kindle hype ebbed away recently it’s time to watch what other companies are doing to create the first ePaper iPod. I still think that the overall amazon service package (wireless reading device + internet access) is a perfect fit. But the problem seems to be the price plus the product and interaction design of the kindle.

Now a new player has arrived on the ePaper market. Plastic Logic is british company with production sites in Dresden. They’re reading device is really thin and should leave the MacBook Air green with envy.

This is a hilarious video. The way these two guys talk about how many papers they got in their briefcases and the “wouldn’t it be great if”-phrase reminds me heavily of the way how vacuum cleaners are presented in shopping channels. great product but let the presentation be done by a professional.

:-) That’s what happens when engineers present the stuff their creating. But I have to say I don’t care because of its credibility and the quality of the product.

This is a much more honest and authentic communication than it would have been with 4 people who don’t know anything about the technology telling him what to to and how to behave. Or even worse some hired moderator talking about stuff he has no clue about.

I hate when they do this stuff! The Darn thing sells itself, especially with the new white case design.Makes it much easier to focus on the pages instead of drifting to that nasty black frame in the older model. “Though it is pretty funny!”

Yes, it is funny. I have to admit :-)
Also a really interesting application is Classics for the iPhone. It sets new standards for interfaces on reading devices. Flipping the pages is a lot of fun. Great user experience. But for me the screen is much too small to read a book without freakin’ out.

What’s your opinion on that? Are you satisfied with your kindle? Is reading a book on the kindle comfortable? For me it’s the walkman of eReading but I’m still waiting for the iPod.

I still love the Kindle, but this does look kind of cool. As e readers catch on there will be all kinds of competion and new gadgets.

It does look good – but they will either need to make a version for the consumer market (kindle crowd) or beef it up to the point where it can take the place of a notebook, at least for a short business trip.

That is so cool! This product eliminates the need for actual books and newspapers. It would be great for flying, especially long trips. I did like the comment the second commenter made about “the engineer presenting his own product.” No passion, bland…They should have got a more upbeat person to do that.
